Cyprus: A Divided Island with a Complex History

A Look at the Background and Current State of Affairs

Cyprus, an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, has a rich and complex history that has shaped its present-day situation. From its ancient roots to its modern-day divisions, Cyprus has undergone numerous transformations and faced significant challenges.

Ancient Origins and Cultural Heritage

Cyprus, with a history spanning over 11,000 years, is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations. Excavations have revealed evidence of human presence on the island dating back to the Neolithic period. Throughout its history, Cyprus has been influenced by various civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and British.

Colonial Rule and Independence

In 1878, Cyprus became a British protectorate, and in 1925, it was officially annexed by Britain. The island gained independence in 1960, but tensions between the Greek Cypriot majority and the Turkish Cypriot minority escalated in the following years.

Conflict and Division

In 1974, Turkish forces invaded Cyprus in response to a Greek-inspired coup attempt. The invasion resulted in the division of the island into two main parts: the Greek Cypriot-controlled south and the Turkish Cypriot-controlled north. The United Nations has maintained a peacekeeping force in Cyprus since 1964 to prevent further clashes.
